From castles in Northern Ireland to the freezing landscapes of Iceland’s Lake Myvatin, Game of Thrones is set in some of the most beautiful locations around the world. To depict the fantastical world, the makers use the latest in visual effect technology. There are special effects in places you would never guess they exist. In fact, some shots look just silly when you see how much is covered by special effects.

Using of Green Screens
In addition to computer-generated worlds being designed from scratch, many scenes combine sets and locations with green screens. These screens are used to add more features such as bridges and churches. They are also added to the sides and tops of buildings to make them appear larger than they are in real life.
Green screens work using a technique known as chroma keying. This involves isolating a specific color and using software to make it transparent. Luminance keying uses a similar process for isolating brightness values or black and white ranges. This means that if a person is wearing something green, the background fills in that image too.
During filming and editing green colors are removed and replaced with video footage to give the illusion of different locations and scenes. In theory, any color can be used for this purpose, but green is the least like skin tone.
Battle of Hardhome
Game of Thrones’ Battle of Hardhome was the biggest throw-down in the fifth season. The show used green screens, neon spandex and other effects to show viewers that nothing is more terrifying than thousands of wights attacking the Wildings and the Night’s Watch as the White Walkers watch atop their undead horses.
Another almost invisible effect seen in the Hardhome confrontation is the presence of snow and atmosphere. The vast majority of that was augmented but was still based on the live action snow that was shot with the special effects team. There was an immense effort made to have blowing snow and to show a progression of the weather event. But with the craziness of the actual weather in Belfast, this was something that was required to be done in in post-production.
